Real-time control of micropollutant removal from secondary effluent by ozonation

چکیده

Ozonation has shown to be a promising technology in removing micropollutants from wastewater effluent but current basic control strategies still result in sub-optimal ozone dosing. This work aimed at applying novel, yet simple, surrogate models (based on delta UVA254), to assess the micropollutant removal on pilot-scale as a proof-of-concept. Different events and fluctuations in effluent conditions (e.g. due to rain or dry weather) were taken into account. During this variable conditions, by alternating the ozone dosed based on the required delta UVA254, a good agreement was seen between predicted and achieved removals for a broad range of micropollutants. Fouling of the online UV-VIS sensors also seemed to be depending on the type of sensor and the effluent quality.

Are we about to upgrade wastewater treatment for removing organic micropollutants?

Activated sludge treatment allows only for a partial removal of micropollutants, mainly via sorption and biological degradation. Ozonation and activated carbon filtration are processes bearing the potential to drastically reduce the micropollutant load discharged to the environment after (centralized) biological treatment. The estimated total costs between 0.05 and 0.20 euro per m3 treated wate...

A hybrid process of biofiltration of secondary effluent followed by ozonation and short soil aquifer treatment for water reuse.

The Shafdan reclamation project facility (Tel Aviv, Israel) practices soil aquifer treatment (SAT) of secondary effluent with hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of a few months to a year for unrestricted agricultural irrigation. During the SAT, the high oxygen demand (>40 mg L(-1)) of the infiltrated effluent causes anoxic conditions and mobilization of dissolved manganese from the soil. An addit...

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products in effluent matrices: A survey of transformation and removal during wastewater treatment and implications for wastewater management.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) represent pollutants of emerging concern, originating in surface and drinking waters largely from their persistence in wastewater effluent. Accordingly, a wealth of recent investigations has examined PPCP fate during wastewater treatment, focusing on their removal during conventional (e.g., activated sludge) and advanced (e.g., ozonation and me...

Influence of wastewater particles on ozone degradation of trace organic contaminants.

In this Article, we demonstrate the influence of effluent particles (in the range of <50 μm) on ozone degradation of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) and effluent-quality parameters. Secondary effluent was filtered through different pore-size filters and ozonated at various ozone doses. Degradation of both ozone-reactive and ozone-refractory contaminants improved following ozonation of efflue...

Optimization of the catalytic ozonation process using copper oxide nanoparticles for the removal of benzene from aqueous solutions

The current study aimed to examine the overall feasibility of the use of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) as a catalyst in ozonation process for the removal of benzene from aqueous solutions under experimental conditions. This experimental study was conducted on a laboratory scale reactor in a semi-batch mode. The effect of critical operating parameters such factors as pH, concentration of ...
